I. Curriculum pillar: Profession of the Faith

Be familiar with the New Testament scriptural foundations for the sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
  • Read the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ Baptism, Pentecost, and The Last Supper.
Be familiar with the New Testament scriptural foundations for the sacraments of Healing: (Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick), and Service: (Holy Orders, Matrimony).
  • Read John 20: 19, 22-23 which recounts Jesus telling his apostles about reconciliation James 5:14-15 (anointing of the sick), 2 Tim 1:6 and 1 Tim 3:1 (Holy Orders) and Eph 5:15, 32 (matrimony)
Know that the Pentateuch refers to the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), also known as the Law or the Torah by the Jews today.
  • Look through the Bible together, differentiate between the Old and New Testament and identify the first five books of the Bible.
Read and participate in a guided discussion of weekly Scripture readings, especially the Gospels, according to the liturgical year.
Understand that listening to and reading the Scriptures attentively and prayerfully is necessary for them to receive what God wishes to communicate to them through His Word.
  • Read through the creation story in Genesis and make up a prayer thanking God for Read Scripture with your child and discuss the meaning of that passage with your child and what he/she heard from God
2. Creed   General involvement
  • Have a Catechism of the Catholic Church in the house.  Make sure you are educated about the Faith so you can answer questions for your child.  Have your child see you reading the Bible, the Catechism or some other spiritual work.
  • Encourage your child to start a relationship with each one of the persons of the blessed Trinity.
  • Display an image of Mary in your home and as a family, pray to her often.
  • Recite the Creed as a family.
Specific involvement
Know that the mystery of the Trinity is the core of our faith because it is the source of all other mysteries of faith.
  • Brainstorm about what loving someone means and talk about what your parents do Find references in the Gospels that Jesus makes to his Father and to the Spirit.
Know that Jesus was the Messiah long awaited by the Israelites as the Redeemer of God's People.
  • Read the Gospel story about Simeon and Anna (Luke 2: 22-40).
Tell that Jesus was conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Read the Gospel passage Luke 1:26-38 and discuss how Mary’s conversation with Gabriel and how she said yes.
Know that the Church was founded on Pentecost through the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and the Virgin Mary.
  • Celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, at Sunday Mass with your family.
Understand that Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is honored as patroness of all of the Americas.
Distinguish between Christian and non-Christian.
  • Take a driving tour through your town and find places of worship.  Distinguish between the Christian and non-Christian places and discuss what the differences are.
Explain that the purpose of the Christian life is to know, love, and serve God and to live forever with him in heaven.
  • Brainstorm about ways to better know, love, and serve God, research a favorite saint and share how they lived their life.
Know that we respect and care for our bodies because they are temples of the Holy Spirit.
Relate that the Church celebrates the presence and actions of Christ through the seven sacraments.
Identify the Church as one in its teaching, holy in its faith, Catholic in its universality, and apostolic in its founding and continuity.

 

II. Curriculum pillar: The Celebration of the Christian Mystery

Understand that we are members of the Church, the Body of Christ, and of a parish community.
  • Research the various ministries in your church and what they do.  Discuss how they all have different missions but all work together to share God’s love.  Discuss how all parts of a body work together to accomplish a task, for example, what parts of the body are involved when you take a walk.
Know the effects of the grace of Matrimony: Christ enables a man and a woman to share their love through a strong, permanent commitment to one another and through their willingness to welcome, nurture, and educate in the faith the children sent to them by God.
  • Show your child pictures from your wedding.
Know that the Paschal Mystery refers to Christ’s suffering, death, Resurrection, and Ascension.
  • Find out when Holy Week is this year and as a family read the Gospel stories about the events leading up to Christ’s Death and Resurrection.
Define sacrament as an outward sign of an inward grace, instituted by Christ.ls.
  • Try to identify what the outward signs are in the sacraments.  Draw pictures of them.
Understand that sacraments are sacred moments in which Christ shares his life with us, and we become visible signs of God's presence.
Know the effects of Baptism: we are cleansed from original sin, we receive sanctifying grace, and we are reborn as children of God and members of Christ's Body, the Church.
  • Research the promises that were made at your baptism.  Write a letter to your Godparents thanking them for their presence in your life.
      
Recognize that Eucharist is the center of Catholic life and understand the effects of the Eucharist: It nourishes us with the Body and Blood of Christ, unites us more deeply with Christ and his Church, transforms us and reconciles us in Christ's love, and empowers us to serve one another.
  • Read the Gospel story about the Last Supper and notice that Jesus himself gave us this Sacrament.  Compare the way food nourishes your body to the way the Eucharist nourishes your soul.
     
Know that the sacrament of Confirmation imparts the fullness of the Spirit through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and celebrates the Confirmand's personal decision to follow Christ.      
Know the effects of the grace of Penance/Reconciliation: the forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God and the Church, and the strengthening of the resolve to do good and avoid sin in the future.
  • Think about a time when you were forgiven by a parent, sibling, friend, etc.  How did it feel?  Pray for someone who is in need of reconciliation.
Understand that the Paschal Know the effects of the grace of Anointing of the Sick:  strengthening, consolation, courage in the face of illness, union with Christ's suffering on the cross, and the spiritual and physical healing in the way that God wills.
  • Pray for those who are in hospitals and nursing homes.
Identify that the Tridiuum, which is celebrated from Holy Thursday evening through Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday, is the most sacred time of the liturgical year.
Understand that Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders may only be received once because through them, the Holy Spirit confers an indelible spiritual seal on the soul.
  • Celebrate the day of your child’s baptism.  Recall the people who were there and share photos.
  • Encourage your child write a card to his/her godparents.
Understand the significance of the Liturgical seasons: Advent, Christmas, Easter, and Ordinary Time.

 

III. Curriculum pillar: Life in Christ

Relate Mary's sensitivity to the needs of others at the Wedding Feast of Cana to the call to respond to the Word of God.
  • Share your view of Mary and how you can be like her.
Study the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper (especially in John 13-18) as a model of the Christian understanding of community and service.
  • Plan a family meal and offer to perform the service of cleaning up afterwards.  Pray together as a family a prayer of thanksgiving for the food on your table.

Discuss how the Eucharist is the source and goal of all Christian communities.

  • Pray for all of the children in your parish who will be receiving their First Eucharist this year.
Study the vocations of Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Religious Life in response to Jesus' call to service.
  • Talk with your child about the different vocations.
As part of the Baptismal commitment, understand that Christian laypersons are called to bring Christ to the world through their professions and occupations.
  • Discuss how each family member can bring Christ to their world through their occupation or group.
Research how Jesus’ identification of himself with the “least of my brothers” (Matt. 25) is lived out through parish and diocesan outreach programs to the poor and suffering.
Identify examples of God using human effort to build his Kingdom of justice, peace, and mercy on earth.
2. Christian Morality   General involvement
Specific involvement

Know that a parable is a story told by Jesus that can help them understand how to live holy lives.

  • Read and discuss parables with your child.
  • Write a parable of a situation in today’s world illustrating Jesus' saving power.
Learn that faith, hope, and charity are theological virtues given to them by God at Baptism to help them throughout their whole lives.
  • Talk about grace and faith.  Give examples of times you received God’s grace.  Describe a time when you needed to use faith.
Understand that sin has personal and social consequences; when we sin, we weaken our friendship with God and with the Church.
  • Discuss an event in history such as the Holocaust and research how many people were killed and the effects of that on history.
Learn that the elements of the sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation are: contrition, confession, absolution, and penance.

Develop the ability to examine their consciences, in light of the Ten Commandments, using an appropriate Examination of Conscience when necessary.

Know that they must respect their bodies because they are temples of the Holy Spirit.
Develop respect for all human life as God’s gift because we are made in God's image and likeness.
  • Visit a nursing home or make a card for the homebound and remember them in your prayers.

 

IV. Curriculum pillar: Christian Prayer

Participate in guided meditative prayer based on Gospel stories.
  • Write a meditative prayer together based on a Gospel story.
Pray the litany of the saints.
Understand the role of Mary and the saints as intercessors.
  • Put a statue of Mary in a special place.  Talk about the ways in which Mary showed us how to follow Christ and be holy.  Write a prayer to Mary asking her to help you become holy.
Describe what prayer means to them and why it is important in their lives.
  • Discuss what friendship is and what it brings to your life.  Think about Jesus as your best friend and share with him your thoughts, feelings and secrets.
Examine Jesus as the model for prayer in the Gospel.
  • Find examples in the gospel stories of when Jesus prayed.
Discuss difficulties in prayer and strategies to overcome them.
  • Set a time aside every day to find something to be grateful for and something to ask God for.
Explore how sacramentals (holy water, blessed palms, candles, ashes, rosary, medals, scapulars, crucifixes, images, statues, etc.) help enhance their spiritual lives.
Perform a personal examination of conscience.
